What is Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is therapy, which uses hypnotic trance as a powerful tool to facilitate change. Hypnotherapy uses hypnosis – but hypnosis is not hypnotherapy! The natural power of your own mind is used to relieve symptoms and alter unwanted behaviour patterns.

Hypnotherapy is about Feeling Empowered and taking Control. It is not about being made to do things subconsciously.

Hypnosis has been around for thousands of years and is just the simple process of putting someone into a trance. When you go into trance, you will experience a change in awareness. Each person has a different way of experiencing trance.

A big misconception about hypnotherapy is that you will be made to do something that you don’t want to do whilst you are in trance, or ‘under’ as some think, or made to look and act silly. You will not do or say anything that you do not think is acceptable. You cannot be made to violate your own values of accepted patterns of behaviour. You would either reject the suggestion or come out of the hypnotic trance. People can only be hypnotised if they want to.

You are always on control and actually have more awareness during a hypnotherapeutic trance. You do not go ‘under’ or ‘to sleep’. You are not unconscious. You are in an alternative state of consciousness , you are actually in a heightened state of awareness. You can hear everything that is said, although you won’t remember all of it, and nothing happens without your consent. You have total control, you will however be extremely relaxed.

Solution focused Hypnotherapy looks at what you want to achieve. Rather than seeing clients coming in with problems seeking help, I acknowledge a clients difficulties and recognize the challenges to overcome, respecting the strengths that sustained this person up to this time and am curious to find out what the future has in store. Solution focused therapy sees clients coming in with solutions seeking expression. This is an active collaboration that affects ‘doing’. The focus is on a clients strengths, their competencies and abilities and looking for possibilities rather than limitations.

‘All men dream, but not all equally. those who dream by night, in the dusty recess of their minds, wake to find it was all vanity. But the dreamers of the day are dangerous, for they may act their dreams with open eyes, and make things happen.’ – T.E. Lawrence.
